Well, it certainly isn’t that I’ve got it all figured out. I’m still terrified to take risks even when I know they’ll likely take me in the direction I want to go. Because taking risks, and making change – it’s hard.
Like fall-to-your-knees, please-is-there-another-way hard.
I started on this path when I was a few months from my 40th birthday and I realized that despite how great my life looked on the outside, I was deeply unhappy. I had all the things I thought I was supposed to want – a good husband, a well-paying executive job, a great kid, a nice house. But every day I ached that something was fundamentally missing.
My journey took me through ending 17 years of marriage, quitting a “good” job without any plan in place, and starting my own business. I started graduate school, and travelled to Guatemala to build a village for orphaned children. I visited ancient temples in Cambodia and modern ones in Thailand. I floated on the Mekong River in Vietnam and learned how to teach meditation at an ashram. I spent time in my garden and my city and my heart to figure out what it means to take brave leaps and create the life you want.
Yes, I’ve got the training that gives me the theory and the systems and the rationale. I’m an Integral trained coach and have a Masters Degree in Leadership (almost – less than six months to go!), which is pretty much all about self-awareness and change.
I have a big bag full of tools, ideas, and techniques that can help you stop the cycle of fear and hope that keeps you stuck. I can help you uncover the strength and courage that are already there.
But what qualifies me, insofar as it’s possible to be qualified for these things, is that I’ve sat at the precipice of a good life that most people would theoretically love to have… and I’ve still wanted more.
I’ve known that I was settling. That I was holding myself small. And slowly, and with difficulty, pushed myself over that edge. I’ve leaped.
And no matter how hard it has been and how much it has surprised me and brought me to my knees, it has saved me. It has created space I didn’t know I needed for this gorgeous, scary, unpredictable life that unfolds before me every day.
I don’t have all the answers. Far from it. But I have some damn good questions and an unwavering faith in your ability to create the life you want if you’re willing to take the leap.
